What a clean laundromat should actually look like

Six-load washers, seating and TVs at Oz Laundry in Decatur

Every laundromat looks acceptable in a photo. Here is what to check in the first thirty seconds of walking into one.

Look at the out-of-order signs

One taped-up machine is normal. Five is a business that is not reinvesting, and it means queues, part-loads and a longer trip for you.

Smell the room, then the drum

A clean store smells like nothing much. If the room smells of damp, the dryers are not venting properly. Open a washer door: gaskets should be clean, not grey.

Sanitizing between uses matters more than most people realise — every machine here runs through a SAN-O-WASH cycle, and washing is ozone-based, which handles odour and bacteria at lower temperatures.

Check the parts nobody photographs

Folding tables should be clean and big enough to actually fold on. Lighting should be bright. There should be somewhere to sit, working Wi-Fi, and if you have kids with you, somewhere for them to be that is not the aisle.

And there should be a person. Staffed hours mean a jammed card reader is a two-minute problem instead of a lost afternoon.

Ready when you are

Schedule a pickup online, or walk in and use the machines yourself. Either way you get the same store.
