Nine laundry habits that give a busy family back an evening

Laundry is rarely one big job. It is fifteen small ones spread across a week, which is exactly why it feels endless. These are the habits that cut the total time rather than just moving it around.
Before the wash
Sort as you go with three bins — lights, darks, towels and bedding. Sorting at the machine costs you ten minutes every single load.
Treat stains within the hour. A blotted stain treated at home beats a set stain treated professionally three days later.
Empty pockets on the way to the bin, not at the machine. Tissues cost you a whole re-wash.
At the machine
Use a bigger machine, not more cycles. One 6-load wash beats three home loads on both time and water.
Do not overfill the dryer. Clothes need air to move; a stuffed drum takes twice as long and leaves creases you then have to iron.
Fold straight out of the dryer. Five minutes then saves twenty later.
The bigger lever
For most families the real saving is not a better technique — it is a week where laundry simply is not on the list. Wash & fold at $1.25 a pound often costs less than the evening it takes back.
Set a standing weekly pickup, leave the bag out, and use the evening for something else.
